At La Capitolare Tower a Portovenere, the medieval tower on the sea

Guide

Where to stay in Portovenere

Portovenere is a small village tucked between the sea and the headland. Where you stay makes a big difference to your holiday: here is how to choose an area, and what you will find at Capitolare Tower.

Choose the right area

The old town begins at Piazza Bastreri and the Porta del Borgo, the arch from 1113 where Via Capellini, the main street, starts. Staying here puts the church of San Pietro, Castello Doria and the harbour where the boats leave just a few steps away.

If you want more peace and quiet, look at Palmaria island, opposite the village, where places to stay are few, or at the nearby villages of the Gulf, such as Le Grazie and Fezzano. La Spezia is handy if you arrive by train, but it is a city, not a seaside village.

Think about how you will get around

Portovenere has no railway station: from La Spezia Centrale you arrive by bus, taxi or boat. You can drive to the village, but the centre is closed to traffic and parking spaces are few. Before you book, always ask where you will be able to park.

At Capitolare Tower covered parking is included in your stay and, if you wish, we arrange your transfer from the station or the airport.

Sleep in a 12th-century tower

The Torre Capitolare was built by the Genoese between 1113 and 1161 and is now a private 128 m² suite on three floors, with a rooftop terrace. It is the oldest tower in the world you can sleep in.

You rent the whole tower: one group at a time, up to four guests. On the ground floor you will find the kitchen and the dining room with its Portoro marble table; on the first floor, the bathroom carved into the rock and the second bedroom; on the top floor, the King bedroom with its window on the sea. Above it, the terrace looks over the whole Gulf of Poets.

Breakfast and covered parking are included, and the concierge answers 24 hours a day on WhatsApp and by phone.

Book at the right time

Portovenere is lively all year round, and the Tower is open twelve months a year. In summer the village is busier and it is worth booking early; in spring and autumn it is quieter.

When you book on our website you pay the best available price and, with the Flexible and King rates, you can cancel free of charge up to 7 days before arrival.
