Find out where the name comes from
The Via dell'Amore dates back to the 1920s, when the railway between Genoa and La Spezia was being doubled: it was a walkway cut into the rock and used to store materials for the works. It soon became the favorite stroll of couples from the two villages, and when someone wrote “Via dell'Amore” at both ends of the path, the name stuck.
On 24 September 2012 a landslide injured four tourists and the path was closed. After safety works carried out from 2022 to 2024, it reopened to visitors on 9 August 2024 with new rules: one-way only, limited entries and timed tickets.

Book your ticket
You buy the ticket on the official Via dell'Amore website: choose the day, the 30-minute slot and the number of people. Entry isn't sold on its own but together with the Cinque Terre Card, Trekking or Train, for one, two or three days. Each slot admits a maximum of 200 visitors, so on spring and summer weekends, and at sunset, it's worth booking a few days ahead.
Arrive at the Riomaggiore entrance a few minutes before your slot, with the ticket on your phone. From the station, a lift takes you up to the entrance. The route is one-way: in Manarola you exit and cannot walk back along the path. To return to Riomaggiore, just take the train, which takes a few minutes.

2026 prices, “starting from”: they vary with the date band. The 2027 price list comes out in January 2027.
CETS is the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism, which the Park grants to accommodation that follows its program: their guests may walk the path in both directions during the booked slot. We'll update this page as soon as the 2027 price list is out.
Enjoy the walk
The path is paved, protected by a railing and almost level, about thirty meters above the sea. Twenty minutes is enough, but nobody walks straight through: you keep stopping to look at the open sea and at Manarola drawing closer.
Along the way you'll find five installations featuring works by the painter Gino Covili. Look up, too: the rock face above you has been secured with nets, anchors and barriers, and that's why you can walk here again today.
It isn't a hike: comfortable shoes are all you need, and the walk suits children and people who aren't used to walking.

Pick the right time
There are two best slots. The first of the morning, at 9 am, when the path is cool and the light skims across the sea. And the sunset slots: the Via dell'Amore faces the open sea to the west, and from April to October, with opening hours until 9 pm, the sun sets into the sea in front of you.
Winter has an advantage few people know about: from November to January the sun sets before 5:30 pm and the path stays open until 6 pm. You can watch the sunset over the sea from the Via dell'Amore with far fewer people around.
Get to Riomaggiore
Riomaggiore is the first regional train stop after La Spezia, a few minutes from La Spezia Centrale station. From spring to autumn you can also get there by boat from La Spezia, Lerici and Portovenere. Driving isn't recommended: parking is very limited and the center is closed to traffic.
From Portovenere the most scenic way is the boat, in season. The rest of the year, take the bus or a taxi to La Spezia station and then the train.
How to visit the Cinque Terre in 2027
Make it the place where you propose
With a name like that, the Via dell'Amore is one of the most popular places for a marriage proposal. To get it right, book the last sunset slot or the first one of the morning, when it's quieter, and keep the ring in a zipped pocket: the path runs above the sea.

Stay nearby, in Portovenere
After the walk, the place to spend the evening is Portovenere, at the gateway to the Cinque Terre and, like them, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Capitolare Tower, built between 1113 and 1161 at the entrance to the village, is a private suite for one party at a time, with a terrace over the gulf, breakfast and covered parking included. On request, our chef cooks dinner for you in the Tower.
